This summer season, on a small street in south-east London, a crowd of individuals prevented immigration officers from detaining an area man. Protestors sat on the bottom in entrance of the van he was held in for hours, shouting “Let him go!”. From Pollokshields to Peckham, during the last couple of years we’ve seen how folks can come collectively to bodily cease immigration raids of their communities and defend their neighbours.
However with the federal government giving the police extra powers to crack down on protests, will actions like these be capable to proceed? What is going on to civil liberties within the UK? And who’s preventing again?
Ayeisha is joined by Zehrah Hasan advocacy director on the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants and Charlie Whelton, coverage and campaigns officer at Liberty.
